The Virgin Islands National Park Established in 1956, the Virgin Islands National Park has grown from the original 5,600 acres of lush, green hillsides bought by Laurence Rockefeller and donated to the federal government, to more than 7,200 acres of land and surrounding sea. The Park is St. John's treasure. Those who live on the island, and those who love it, are fiercely protective of it. An on-island nonprofit group, The Friends of the Virgin Islands National Park, serves as the park's benefactor. Through fund raising efforts and sponsored outings, Friends helps support the day-to-day upkeep of the park and its historical ruins. Caneel Bay Resort, originally owned by Mr. Rockefeller, is the island's premier resort. Its pristine, white sandy beaches are enjoyed by well-heeled travelers year round. Maho Bay Estates includes a beautiful 850 foot long white sandy beach identical to those enjoyed by guests at Caneel Bay, giving Maho Bay unique potential as another world-class island resort. |
